Two arrested by DRI for Ganja transportation found guilty, sentenced

Hyderabad: A court in Vijayawada recently awarded rigorous imprisonment (RI) for a period of 10 years and fine of Rs. 1 lakh on two persons arrested and prosecuted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in a case of Ganja transportation, a departmental release has said.

Ganja is a Narcotics Drug as per the NDPS Act, 1985, and dealing in it is a punishable offence under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985.

Sometime ago, sleuths of the DRI had intercepted a transport vehicle when it was coming from Eluru towards Hyderabad. After due process, the officers seized 1,394.32 kg of cannabis (Ganja) from the said vehicle. They then arrested two persons under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985. After conclusion of investigation, they filed a complaint against the accused before the court.

Based on the complaint filed, trial proceedings were conducted and the court found both accused guilty of the offences and sentenced them accordingly.

The court found the accused guilty of illicitly transporting huge quantities of ganja by concealing it under wooden logs in furtherance of a well-planned conspiracy, and sentenced both of them under provisions of Section 20(b)(ii)(C) of the NDPS Act, 1985, to rigorous imprisonment for a period of 10 years and a fine of Rs. 1 lakh each and in case of default of payment of fine, simple imprisonment for a period of three months, the DRI release added.
