Mysuru: Shravani Shivanna, a Class XI student of Excel Public School in Mysuru, was part of the Indian U-16 Women’s Basketball Team that clinched the FIBA U-16 Women’s Asia Cup 2025 (Division B) held in Malaysia recently.

India’s thrilling 67–66 win over Iran in the final secured a promotion to Division A, marking a proud moment for Indian basketball.

Shravani is the only student from Mysuru and one among just three players from Karnataka to represent India in this championship.

At the tournament, Shravani made important contributions during crucial games including key assists in the semifinal against Indonesia and scoring bursts in the group-stage match against Iran.

Her selection crowns a decorated journey through national competitions. She has represented Karnataka across age categories, winning medals at the Sub-Junior, Youth, and Khelo India National Games, including three golds and two silvers between 2021 and 2025.

In the SABA U-16 Championship, she averaged 7.8 points, 3.5 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game, reflecting her growing all-round strength.

“It still feels surreal to have been part of India’s winning team at the FIBA Asia Cup,” said Shravani.

“Playing against international teams taught me the true value of teamwork, focus, and resilience. Every match was a learning experience, and I’m deeply grateful to my coaches and teachers at Excel Public School for their constant guidance and encouragement,” she added.

Shravani credited her success to support from her school principal Mathew K.G., Vice-Principal Gubain Mathew, Head teachers and  staff of the Physical Education Department.  

Shravani was felicitated during the school’s investiture ceremony, where she was awarded the Prof. M.H. Dhananjaya Scholarship, offering a 75 percent concession on tuition fees, in recognition of her achievement.

The FIBA U-16 Women’s Asia Cup is a biennial continental championship organised by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), Asia’s most prestigious competition for emerging basketball talent under 16.

Divided into Division A and Division B based on performance rankings, the tournament brings together the strongest national teams across Asia and Oceania.

India’s promotion to Division A now places the team among the region’s elite, paving the way to compete with basketball powerhouses such as Japan, China, Korea and Australia in the next edition.
