This Bengaluru hospital hopes to make cancer treatment accessible to the middle-class…

Bengaluru : In a healthcare ecosystem often divided between high-cost private treatment and overstretched public hospitals, the newly launched Arion Radiotherapy and Oncology Centre (ARC Cancer Hospital) is attempting to redefine cancer care delivery in India with a balanced, patient-centric approach.

Positioning itself as a “middle-path” model, ARC Cancer Hospital aims to bridge a long-standing gap in oncology services — offering advanced, globally aligned cancer treatment at significantly reduced costs.

The initiative seeks to address a critical challenge faced by India’s middle class, which often struggles to access timely and quality cancer care without facing severe financial strain.

India’s cancer care system has traditionally presented patients with a stark choice: opt for premium private hospitals equipped with cutting-edge technology but high expenses, or rely on government institutions where affordability may come at the cost of long waiting periods and limited resources. ARC’s model attempts to eliminate this trade-off.

“Quality cancer treatment should not be a privilege,” said Dr. Srihari R. Shapur, Founder and Managing Director of ARC Cancer Hospital. “Our vision is to bridge the existing gaps in cancer care by making high-quality treatment accessible to the middle-income population, while also extending support to economically weaker sections through government schemes.”

The hospital offers integrated, multi-disciplinary cancer care under one roof — including surgical oncology, chemotherapy, and advanced radiotherapy. By streamlining services and leveraging modern infrastructure, ARC aims to reduce treatment delays and improve patient outcomes.

Chairman Dr. Dinesh Mavinahalli highlighted that the facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and supported by a dedicated team of specialists available round the clock. “Our focus is on delivering comprehensive care — from early screening to advanced treatment — ensuring patients receive continuous and timely medical attention,” he said.

A key differentiator for ARC is its emphasis on speed and efficiency in diagnosis and treatment initiation. By minimising waiting times and offering personalised care pathways, the hospital addresses one of the most pressing challenges in Oncology — delayed intervention.

Medical Director Dr. Samskruthi P. Murthy noted that the hospital’s advanced radiotherapy systems enable precise and well-planned treatments, enhancing both safety and effectiveness. “Timely and structured treatment protocols are central to improving clinical outcomes,” she said.

Further strengthening its clinical framework, ARC integrates international tumour boards involving oncology experts from the United States. This collaborative approach provides access to globally benchmarked protocols, multidisciplinary case reviews, and emerging therapies such as immunotherapy — ensuring that patients in Bengaluru benefit from international standards of care.

Commitment to inclusive healthcare

Beyond serving the middle-income segment, ARC Cancer Hospital has also taken steps to extend care to underserved communities. The hospital has initiated radiotherapy services under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) scheme and is working towards expanding access through government initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat.

Support from public representatives, including T.B. Jayachandra, Special Representative of the Government of Karnataka, underscores a growing alignment between public and private stakeholders to enhance healthcare accessibility for underprivileged patients.

The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including Ramalinga Reddy, Uday Garudachar, Dr. Mohammed Maqsood Imran Rashadi, and Dr. Maheshwar Rao, reflecting broad-based support for the initiative.

Addressing a growing healthcare challenge

With cancer incidence on the rise in India, the need for scalable, affordable, and high-quality treatment solutions has never been more urgent. ARC’s model raises a critical question for the healthcare sector: can advanced oncology care be delivered at scale without compromising affordability or clinical excellence?

While the long-term success of this approach will depend on patient outcomes and sustainability, ARC Cancer Hospital represents a significant step towards reshaping cancer care delivery in the country.

By attempting to bridge the divide between cost and quality, the institution offers renewed hope — that access to world-class cancer treatment in India may no longer be determined by financial capacity alone.
