Azim Premji Scholarship: A ray of hope for 2.5 lakh dreams

Bengaluru: In a powerful move to uplift the futures of lakhs of young girls across India, the Azim Premji Foundation has announced a scholarship programme that promises to transform the lives of up to 2.5 lakh girl students in the academic year 2025–26.

The initiative, rooted in compassion and a deep commitment to equity, is a lifeline for girls from marginalized communities who have completed their Class 10 and 12 in government schools and have secured admission in a recognized degree or diploma programme.

The Azim Premji Scholarship offers Rs 30,000 per year, disbursed directly into the student’s bank account in two instalments annually. This support continues throughout the duration of their course — whether it’s a 3-year B.A., a 4-year B.Sc. Nursing, or a 2-year diploma.

“Higher education doesn’t just change a resume — it changes a life,” says Anurag Behar, CEO of Azim Premji Foundation.

“Even today, many girls are forced to give up their dreams due to financial constraints and societal pressures. This scholarship is about giving them a real choice.”

The Foundation piloted this initiative in 2024–25 in select districts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand, impacting over 25,000 girl students in just its first cycle.

For many recipients, this was not just financial aid — it was validation that their dreams matter.

Scholarship coverage and eligibility

Eligibility: Girls who have studied in government (public) schools in Class 10 and 12 and have secured admission to a recognized degree or diploma programme.

Institutions covered: All government higher education institutions and selected private ones.

Amount: ₹30,000 per year, up to ₹1.2 lakh for a 4-year programme.

States covered (2025–26): 18 states including Assam, Bihar, Karnataka, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and more.

Empowering through education

The Foundation underscores that good school education is foundational, but it is higher education that truly alters a girl’s life trajectory. It opens up opportunities, builds self-worth, and enables them to participate in shaping their own futures.

With the 2025–26 application cycle starting this September, girls and families across 18 Indian states will now have a reason to hope again.

The Foundation plans to expand this programme nationwide in the coming years, ensuring that no girl with a dream is left behind.
