TCS World 10K Philanthropy Awards: Governor advocates nurturing of sports culture to build a strong India

Bengaluru: Thaawarchand Gehlot, Governor of Karnataka, recently called upon society to work together to build a strong India by adopting sportsmanship in everyday life.

He was addressing the TCS World 10K Bengaluru Philanthropy Awards distribution ceremony.

Highlighting Karnataka’s emerging identity in the sports world, the Governor noted, “Karnataka, a land known for knowledge, science, and culture since ancient times, is now making a mark in the global sports arena as well. Bengaluru, in particular, is not just the capital of IT and innovation, but is fast becoming a sports capital too — thanks to the spirit of achievement, dedication, and vision of its people.”

He praised events like the TCS World 10K, Bengaluru Marathon, Pro Kabaddi, and IPL for fostering a vibrant sports culture.

“TCS World 10K has transcended being just a race — it’s now the very identity of Bengaluru. It showcases the city’s commitment to fitness, participation, and collective energy,” he said.

Speaking about the success of the 17th edition of the TCS World 10K held on April 27, 2025, he said, “Over 27,000 runners from 37 countries took part, making it one of the largest races not only in India but in the world. This is a proud achievement for all of us.”

He emphasized the philanthropic dimension of the event, adding, “This international sporting event also represents a unique charitable model. Over ₹3.83 crore has been raised, benefitting several NGOs and marginalized communities. Remarkably, youth participants alone contributed over ₹28 lakh — an inspiring testament to their social responsibility.”

The Governor also applauded the corporate and social sectors for their contributions.

“This event is a shining example of how the corporate world and civil society can come together to improve health and uplift communities. I congratulate all the individuals and organizations being recognized today for promoting sports and community service,” he added.

He also highlighted the state’s ongoing initiatives to promote sports. “Karnataka has laid a solid foundation for world-class sports facilities, established special training centres, and introduced key programmes such as the Amrut Sports Adoption Scheme to support young talent. The state has also effectively implemented national schemes like Khelo India and Fit India.”

Addressing the role of technology in modern sports, he said, “As the technological capital of India, Bengaluru is leveraging wearable technology, AI tools, and data analytics to enhance athletic performance. Startups in the state are also innovating rapidly in this space.”

Governor Gehlot also welcomed the recently launched National Sports Policy 2025, which aims to transform India into a global sports powerhouse by 2047.

“This policy will serve as a guiding force for holistic sports development in the country — improving infrastructure, training, and overall competitiveness,” he said.
