Rail Wheel Factory shows great wheel-power in FY 2024-25. Dive in…

Bengaluru: Rail Wheel Factory, Yelahanka, is a unit of the Indian Railways which specializes in manufacture of cast wheels, forged axles and wheelsets.

In the last Financial Year, RWF has breached a number of records like manufacture of the highest ever wheels – 2,01,150 to be exact, and the highest ever manufacture of wheelsets – 98,350.

RWF also achieved the second highest ever manufacture of axles – 93,880 this FY. It has also bolstered its production capacity by commissioning an additional axle machining line which will increase the annual production capacity by 42,500 axles.

Further, RWF being an energy intensive plant, has taken steps to conserve energy with several innovative measures initiated in this regard. Considering the nature of work at RWF, the factory requires proper illumination round the clock in all areas for safe working.

It was decided to explore the installation of Piped Day Lighting System to increase illumination in the shop floor.  This revolutionary idea is expected to reduce the consumption of energy considerably.

Environmental measures like Thermal Sand Reclamation Plant at RWF is a unique feature of the plant as it enables recovery of foundry sand thereby minimizing environmental impact.

The heavy heating equipment like heat treatment furnaces run on Piped Natural Gas (PNG) which is less carbon intensive as compared to other sources of energy from fossil fuels.

RWF has created a wet-land in which rain water is harvested and collected in low lying areas. This will be de-silted to increase the capacity of water holding during the first quarter of the year, a release signed by G. Venkatesh, CPRO, RWF, has said.
