Gruha Jyothi scheme: No need for tenants to panic, says Bescom

Bengaluru: The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) has clarified that tenant beneficiaries receiving free electricity under the state government’s flagship Gruha Jyothi scheme do not need to worry about the ongoing verification drive, which began on July 1, 2026.

Many current tenants expressed their apprehension that they would lose the benefits of the scheme due to Aadhar details of the previous tenants connected to their electricity bills.

Bescom, in a release, recently clarified that during ongoing verification drive  its staff would only replace the Aadhar details based on current occupancy.

The Escom has assured beneficiaries that gathering information was a routine process and would not stop or interrupt the Gruha Jyothi benefits.

The free electricity scheme will continue as usual during and after the update.

The clarification further stated that tenants do not need to visit any Bescom office or complete any extra paperwork on their own. Meter readers and staff are conducting a door-to-door survey and will update the information (including rental/lease agreements).

Bescom has requested beneficiaries to keep the relevant records ready during field staff visits and cooperate with the survey teams for better scheme implementation.

Helpline information

For any questions or further clarifications, consumers can call Bescom helpline number 1912 or call 9480816111, 9480816112, 9480816113, and 9480816114. The helpline operates daily from 6 am to 10 pm.
