BEML says Mission ‘2100’ Accomplished, and more to go. Here’s what it means…

Bengaluru: In a landmark moment for India’s rail manufacturing sector, BEML Ltd. marked the ceremonial rollout of its 2100th metro coach at its Rail Coach Unit in Bengaluru.

The event was graced by the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Mohan Yadav, who also formally handed over the land allotment letter to BEML Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy for a new manufacturing unit in Umeria, Raisen District, Madhya Pradesh.

The new facility, spread across 60.063 hectares, has been approved by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and will be dedicated to manufacturing rolling stock and metro coaches for both mainline and urban transit systems.

This expansion reinforces BEML’s growing role in driving India’s urban mobility ambitions and is expected to catalyze regional economic growth by generating employment and fostering MSME development.

A dual milestone in Indian rail infrastructure

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav said, “This milestone is a reflection of India’s engineering prowess and its rise as a global leader in rail manufacturing. The 2100th metro coach not only showcases BEML’s excellence but also aligns with our vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The new facility in Raisen will serve as a cornerstone for industrial development in Madhya Pradesh, creating opportunities for our youth and local enterprises while boosting sustainable, inclusive growth.”

The 2100th metro coach, manufactured for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), is a symbol of next-generation urban transport.

Built with Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) technology, it is capable of fully Unattended Train Operation (UTO), meeting the highest global standards in safety, efficiency, and automation.

BEML’s vision: Self-reliance, innovation, and global standards

CMD Shantanu Roy highlighted the significance of the dual achievements thus:
“We are honoured by the Madhya Pradesh government’s trust in BEML. The new Raisen facility will significantly scale up our capabilities and strengthen the nation’s rail ecosystem. Reaching the milestone of 2100 metro coaches underscores our commitment to innovation, Make in India, and sustainability. With every coach we build, we are contributing to a smarter, greener, and more connected future for urban India.”

Innovation at its core

The trainset features India’s first Onboard Condition Monitoring System, integrating five advanced modules for: Real-time rail track condition monitoring, Overhead equipment (OHE) analysis, Pantograph-OHE interaction tracking, Arc detection and Rail profile analysis.

This system enables predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics from the depot control centre — significantly enhancing safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.

Passengers will also benefit from advanced features including ergonomic interiors, dynamic route maps, intelligent air conditioning, CCTV surveillance, fire detection systems, and a dedicated cycle stand — offering a seamless and comfortable commuter experience.

A journey of leadership in urban transit

BEML’s metro legacy began with its RS1 project for DMRC in the early 2000s. Over the past two decades, the company has delivered metro coaches to major Indian cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Mumbai — serving millions of commuters daily and forming the backbone of the nation’s urban transit infrastructure.
