‘A’-Commerce: With a 1.1 million square-foot office in Bengaluru, Amazon deepens $75 billion India commitment

Bengaluru: Amazon on Monday opened its second-largest office in Asia in Bengaluru, reinforcing India’s strategic importance in the company’s global growth roadmap and innovation network.

Spread across 1.1 million square feet on a five-acre site about 15 kilometres from Kempegowda International Airport, the 12-storey campus is also Amazon’s second-largest single-building corporate office globally. The facility will accommodate over 7,000 employees working across e-commerce, operations, payments, technology, devices, AWS, Prime Video and seller services.

The campus was officially inaugurated by M. B. Patil, Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development.

In his address, Patil welcomed Amazon’s expanded commitment to India and underscored Karnataka’s leadership in technology and innovation.

“Amazon’s continued investment in Bengaluru reflects India’s growing role as a global technology and innovation hub. Large-scale campuses like this create high-quality jobs, strengthen the local ecosystem and support India’s digital economy,” he said.

He further added: “We applaud Amazon’s commitment to invest $35 billion in India by 2030. This ambitious vision will empower millions of small businesses and support billions of jobs. Karnataka remains at the heart of this transformation. With over 900 Global Capability Centres here and strong GST contributions, we are shaping policies that are future-ready and innovation-driven.”

India: A long-term priority

Samir Kumar, Country Manager, Amazon India, reiterated the company’s long-term commitment to the country thus: “India continues to be a long-term priority for Amazon, and Bengaluru has played a central role in our journey here. The city has been home to some of our earliest technology and business teams and remains a key hub for innovation and talent.”

“As we build for customers in India and around the world, we remain committed to investing in infrastructure, technology and talent for the long term.”

Amazon has already invested over $40 billion in India and recently committed to invest an additional $35 billion by 2030, taking its total planned investment to $75 billion.

India-based teams powering global operations

David Zapolsky, Senior Vice-President, Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer at Amazon, highlighted India’s growing role in driving global innovation thus: “We have seen strong and sustained growth across all our businesses in India — including e-commerce, AWS, devices, payments and Prime Video. Indian customers are digitally savvy, mobile-first and quick to embrace new technologies.”

He emphasised that India was not just a market but a global innovation engine:

“From core cloud infrastructure and machine learning systems to supply chain optimisation and customer experience tools, India-based teams power mission-critical services across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia-Pacific,” he said.

Zapolsky also cited Amazon Now as an example of India-led innovation going global. He said: “What began as a solution tailored for India’s fast-paced urban centres is now making its way across the Middle East, North America, Europe and Latin America.”

Karnataka remains central to Amazon’s India operations. The company operates:

• Ten corporate offices,
• 7 fulfilment centres,
• 3 sort centres,
• Over 130 last-mile delivery stations,
• A growing network of micro-fulfilment centres for Amazon Now

More than 80,000 sellers from Karnataka currently sell on Amazon’s marketplace.

With its newest campus in Bengaluru, Amazon is signalling more than real estate expansion — it is reaffirming India’s role as a global technology powerhouse and positioning the country as a core innovation engine for its worldwide operations.
