Karnataka gets a global award, for ‘free’

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government’s ambitious ‘Shakti’ scheme, which provides free bus travel for women, has achieved a global milestone.

With over 500 crore free tickets issued to women, the scheme has now been recognized in the International Book of Records – World Record of Excellence.

The Shakti scheme had already been listed for its scale in the Golden Book of World Records.

Ramalinga Reddy, Minister for Transport, in a press release, said the scheme had empowered women in the state economically, socially and professionally.
