Hinterland needs more healthcare, says Governor; urges RGUHS graduates to consider ‘remote working’

Bengaluru: Thaawarchand Gehlot, Governor of Karnataka, has expressed the view that everyone should be happy and healthy — which is the ultimate goal of medical service. He was presiding over the 27th convocation of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Karnataka, in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

Addressing the graduating students, he emphasized the need for a humanitarian approach in the delivery of healthcare.

“Medical service is the greatest human and divine service. Doctors are often regarded as a form of God. If young graduates serve society with honesty and compassion, they will not only become successful doctors but will also achieve excellence in their careers,” he remarked.

Recalling India’s rich legacy in medical science, the Governor highlighted the contributions of ancient scholars such as Maharishi Charaka, considered the father of Ayurveda and medicine, and Maharishi Sushruta, revered as the father of surgery.

He noted that post-Independence, India had made remarkable strides in the medical field due to the dedication and innovation of its people.

He urged young doctors to keep pace with rapid technological advancements such as artificial intelligence, telemedicine, and robotic surgery.

“Constant learning is essential in today’s dynamic medical landscape. However, even as technology progresses, our rural areas suffer shortage of healthcare professionals. I call upon young doctors to serve in the villages and contribute to strengthening rural healthcare,” he said.

He also encouraged the graduates to actively participate in nation-building by promoting health awareness and serving with a sense of responsibility toward society.

Concluding his address, he invoked the timeless ideal, “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niramayah” — May all be happy, May all be free from illness — and wished the graduating students a bright and meaningful future.

During the convocation, honorary degrees were conferred upon Dr. Hombegowda Sarath Chandra, Dr. Girish Rao, and Dr. G.T. Subhash for their exceptional contributions to science and medicine.

The event was attended by Minister for Medical Education Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil, Wipro founder-chairman Azim Premji, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Bhagvan B.C., and other distinguished guests.
