HAL gives underprivileged wings, launches student scholarships at IIT Madras

Chennai/Bengaluru: In a transformative step toward educational equity, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has launched the HAL Endowment Scholarship Scheme in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM).

The initiative aims to support meritorious students from economically weaker sections, reaffirming HAL’s commitment to social responsibility and inclusive growth.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed by Pradeep Kumar, General Manager (HR), HAL and Prof. Manu Santhanam, Dean-in-charge–Alumni and Corporate Relations, IIT-M.

The event witnessed the presence of Dr. D. K. Sunil, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), HAL, Dr. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, M. G. Balasubrahmanya, Director (HR), HAL, Dr. S. D. Premkumar, Independent Director, HAL, and other senior officials from both institutions.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. D.K. Sunil said, “HAL recognises that true progress begins with equal access to quality education. We believe that no student should be denied the opportunity to study at a reputed institution like IIT Madras due to economic constraints. By supporting deserving students from underprivileged backgrounds, HAL is unlocking their potential and empowering them while fostering academic excellence.”

Investing in the future

Under the scheme, HAL will provide financial assistance to 40 students over the next four years, with 40 additional students receiving support each year for the following 15 years.

The scholarship is open to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are pursuing degrees in aeronautical, mechanical, electrical, and metallurgical engineering at IIT Madras — disciplines that are closely aligned with HAL’s core areas of expertise.

This sustained commitment ensures long-term impact, helping transform individual lives while strengthening India’s engineering and innovation ecosystem.

CSR with a national vision

The scholarship initiative is part of HAL’s expansive CSR portfolio, which spans education, skilling, environment, healthcare, women’s empowerment, and sports.

In the past five years alone, HAL has contributed over ₹500 crore to social development initiatives across India.

This partnership with IIT Madras adds a new dimension to HAL’s education-focused CSR efforts — enabling bright minds to rise above financial barriers and contribute to India’s growth story.

As HAL powers India’s aerospace ambitions, it is also quietly building a future where opportunity meets merit, and talent finds wings — regardless of background.
