Bengaluru: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has announced yet another moment of pride for the nation as renowned Indian mountaineer, Aritra Roy, successfully summited Mount Aconcagua in Argentina — the highest peak outside Asia — standing tall at 6,967.15 metres above Mean Sea Level.
The landmark ascent, completed on January 7, 2026, at 2:00 pm (local time), marks a significant milestone in Roy’s ambitious Seven Summits Challenge, following his earlier conquest of Mount Everest.
Undertaken as a solo expedition and fully sponsored by HAL, the climb reinforces India’s growing presence in global high-altitude mountaineering.
Roy completed the summit push well ahead of schedule after a gruelling 44-kilometre trek, battling extreme conditions that included temperatures plunging to -40°C, fierce snowstorms and blizzards.
Demonstrating remarkable endurance and composure in the thin Andean air, he spent 45 minutes at the summit before beginning his descent.
Congratulating Roy on the historic achievement, Dr D K Sunil, Chairman and Managing Director, HAL, said the ascent stands as a powerful example of grit and perseverance.
“The successful summit of Mount Aconcagua by Aritra Roy is an inspiring story of determination, resilience and unwavering focus. HAL is proud to have sponsored the expedition and congratulates Aritra on this outstanding accomplishment, wishing him continued success in his future endeavours,” he said.
Reflecting on the climb, Roy described the ascent of Aconcagua — often referred to as the ‘Stone Sentinel’— as a deeply humbling experience.
“Ascending the Stone Sentinel, one gasp of thin Andean air at a time, was a true test of faith. I am proud, honoured and indebted to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for supporting me on this mission. The climb tested every ounce of my physical and mental strength, but by adapting to the situation and trusting my instincts, I was able to overcome this toughest challenge,” he said.
Dedicating the summit to dreamers and achievers alike, Roy added that the accomplishment is a reminder that relentless effort, belief and resilience can turn the most formidable peaks into attainable goals — both in the mountains and beyond.
